The Hank in Chains Show Episode #0036 (05/26/2009)

The Hank in Chains Show
Episode #0036 (05/26/2009)

On Wednesday, May 26th, The Hank in Chains Show returns with a feature on Bob Dylan’s underrated 1978 record, “Street Legal”. On the heels of his mid-70s classic albums “Blood on the Tracks” and “Desire”, Dylan released a record that sported abstract lyrics and a big production sound similar to Springsteen’s “Born to Run”. Often unfairly criticized because of that production, it is often forgotten when Dylan fans discuss his greatest records. On this week’s show, we’ll give it the love it deserves.

Other music this week from: Stone Temple Pilots, The Black Keys, Hank Williams III, Jimi Hendrix, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, James Scott Bullard, Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band, Buddy Holly, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, James Hand, The Drive By Truckers, and Merle Haggard.

The Hank in Chains Show
Episode #0027 (11/18/2009)

This week’s episode of The Hank in Chains Show features Alice in Chains‘ first new album in over 13 years, “Black Gives Way to Blue”. Marred by addiction and the eventual tragic death of founding lead vocalist Layne Staley of 2002, only a few years ago no one ever assumed we’d ever hear from Alice in Chains again. However, after a few special reunion shows, guitarist Jerry Cantrell, bassist Mike Inez, and drummer Sean Kinney got the itch to bring the band back. They recruited former Comes with the Fall vocalist William DuVall to recreate Alice in Chains’ outstanding harmony vocals. People doubted the band, especially DuVall, but “Black Gives Way to Blue” has proven the critics wrong in a big way.

Other music this week from: The Drive-By Truckers, Warren Zevon, Hank Williams III, The Reverend Horton Heat, Eleven Hundred Springs, Gram Parsons, George Harrison, The Kinks, Stone Temple Pilots, Songs from the Road Band, The Black Keys, and Jimi Hendrix.

“The Jewel In the Crown ~ Jeff Beck”

This weeks bootleg features the great Jeff Beck recorded 2005 in London, England. While Beck was not the first rock guitarist to experiment with electronic distortion, he nonetheless helped to redefine the sound and role of the electric guitar in rock music. Beck’s work with The Yardbirds and The Jeff Beck Group’s 1968 album Truth were seminal influences on heavy metal music, which emerged in full force in the early 1970s. Jeff Beck is still highly influential with many modern guitarists, whom cite him as a major influence on their playing. On this night in London, Jeff Beck plays the whole set with tunes of Jimi Hendrix; its just GREAT!

Plus I play a 3 song block from Voodoo Johnson.

Artists on this weeks Bootleg Asylum Radio Show include: Hell Goat, Hans Dalen, Special Ops, Black Sabbath, Holy Liars, Sanktuary, Premonition, Diesel Finger, The Bastards Of Apocalypes, ShadowRealm, and more.

“Texas Is Its Own Country’s Country”

This weeks bootleg set was recorded on 6/21/2009 by Mike Kerr at the Sportsman’s Tavern in Buffalo, NY featuring “Lucky Tubb and the Modern Day Troubadours“. Lucky Tubb, who currently is opening for Hank III & Assjack, is the great nephew of the legendary honky tonk singer, Ernest Tubb. Ernest was one of the biggest stars in country music history who amassed no fewer than 82 hits between 1944 and 1979. Poor ol’ Lucky is going to enjoy about 82 hits fewer than that, not because he’s bad, in fact he’s good, very good, but he suffers from the modern day syndrome of being too country. Let’s be honest, his Uncle Ernie would be laughed out of Nashville nowadays with his chiseled looks and un-CMT vocals delivery. Lucky Tubb is very much his own man. He’s lived a troublesome life and has his own story to tell. He’s toured as opening act for Dwight Yoakam, Ray Price and Hank III but on this listening, I think he’s gonna be the headliner pretty soon.

Artists on this weeks Bootleg Asylum Radio Show include: Wicked Society, Pegazus, Graham Greene, Romancing The Devil, Scarlet Sins, Southern Spirit, Automan.ca, Angry Hank, Fanny Adams, Texas Rifles, Frank Zappa, Jimi Hendrix, and more.
